Description: Waiting for your purchase is this very pretty small dish that features the GEISHA. The dish is made of a nice quality porcelain material and well decorated. One geisha stands in the center with her umbrella, another, wearing blue, is seated with her fan. Still another, walks across an arched bridge. There are buildings in the background, including a tall pagoda. A white-capped mountain rises in the back, perhaps Mt. Fuji. Green trees and lovely flowers, especially the chrysanthemum which is a symbol of Japan, fill in the picture. The scene is quite active, yet serene. A thick rim of red-brown encircles the dish. There is a stamped, red mark on the back which says "JAPAN". The dish probably dates to the 1950's or slightly later, but that is a guess. There is some hand-painting involved, but I believe most of the design is done by transfer pattern. The ladies' hair is painted on thickly in black, so you can actually feel the separate hair sections. Swashes of blue or red are applied to the clothing and flowers. The leaves and grass are done in green. This could be a soap dish, ashtray, or general utility dish, a nice place for rings or jewelry on the dresser. It measures 4.5 inches in diameter.
