Vintage SHOTGUN WEDDING Novelty Plate Gold Trim 1949 Fairway Mfg. Co. Mid Century Hillbilly Humor

Description: Waiting for your purchase is this most unusual decorative plate. It is a SHOTGUN WEDDING plate made by the FAIRWAY MFG. CO. of St. Louis, Mo. It is copyrighted 1949. The plate has gently scalloped edges and is made of a good quality porcelain material. It is all white except for the gold decoration. I have tried several times to photograph this item, but I can never get the gold to show up just right. But, the decoration IS all golden and shiny in the light. Turned a certain way, it looks silvery. This photo does not do the item justice. The yellowing area at the right side is the gold beginning to show up. It is not faded or yellowed as it appears. There is a wide band of decoration along the edge that incorporates flowers and scrolls as well as dots. In the center of the plate, we see a cartoon of a LIL Abner style hill couple getting married while the father holds a shotgun on the groom. The bride holds a baby. Below the cartoon area is a poem which reads: THIS WEDDING TOOK PLACE IN THE HILLS WITH A GUN INSTEAD OF A CAKE. IT DIDN'T HAVE THE USUAL FRILLS BECAUSE OF A SMALL MISTAKE!

The "mistake", of course, is the baby. The poem suggests jokingly that the marriage HAD to take place because of the baby. This message reflects the morals of the 40's and 50's whereby if you were expecting a child or already had a child, you HAD to get married. All this is changed now.

This plate would make a super bridal shower gag gift, especially if the bride is already "in a family way". It is also a cute gift for the "Golden" or 50th anniversary of a wedding, whether it was a shotgun wedding or not. It would also make a wonderful conversation piece for a bridal store! The maker's mark is on the back and also done in gold lettering.

Measurement: The plate measures 10 inches across in diameter.

Condition: Wonderful vintage condition. There are no chips or cracks or crazing. There is a bit of rubbing to the gold area around the baby, but otherwise gold is very, very good condition.
