Description: Waiting for your purchase is this lovely, hand-painted BLUE RIDGE saucer from SOUTHERN POTTERIES INC. The pattern is called VIBRANT, and it certainly is. It features a large wine-red flower with another smaller bud. Leaves are green with lighter green sides. Stems are brown. A dab of green alternates around the edge of the saucer to give a sponged effect. The side of the dish is gently scalloped and raised lines radiate out from the center like rays. This is genuine Blue Ridge. The piece is not marked at all, but there is a reason for that. I read that during production years, it was only necessary that one piece out of a certain number of dishes be marked, so many were not.
Blue Ridge pottery was made in Erwin, Tennessee. At one time, it was the largest pottery in the country, and it employed young ladies to hand-paint the colorful dishes in dozens of patterns. But, because of the low cost of imported dishes and the emergence of the new plastic wares, Blue Ridge and many other potteries were forced to close. Blue Ridge closed its doors in 1957. Its lovely pottery is still avidly sought and today is considered almost folk art.
Usually, the painters only did one color, and then the dish was passed on down the line to have leaves or stems added. If you look closely, you can see the actual brush strokes and the differences in touch and painting technique. I think I can discern 4 different painters associated with this one saucer! Even when a painter did the same color, over and over, she sometimes had a heavier touch. That's why sometimes the paint is applied darker, sometimes lighter. In any case, the work is lovely and gives me chills to imagine the ladies toiling at the pottery over 50 years ago!
Start your collection or add to it with this gorgeous saucer! It's a kind of time-capsule for the mid-20th century!
Measurement: The saucer measures just under 6 inches across in diameter, about 5 3/4 inches.
Condition: Great Vintage Condition, no chips or cracks
