DESCRIPTION: Waiting for your purchase is a vintage dish featuring a cartoon by Chon Day. The front of the plate features a man and a woman on a sailboat and says NAUTICAL TERMS...ABEAM ON THE SIDE OF THE VESSEL. The reverse is marked THE INSULTING ASHTRAY CO. COPIED FROM A CARTOON BY CHON DAY. I am not sure of a date, but would guess it to be in the 1950's or 60's, perhaps earlier. This is a very rare dish and one that would be perfect for a sailing enthusiast!
Chon Day or Chauncey Addison Day (1907-2000) was a popular New Yorker cartoonist contributor and The Saturday Evening Post's longest-running cartoonist. He also was famous for his own cartoon books featuring "Brother Sebastian."
MEASUREMENT: Dish measures approx. 5 inches in diameter
CONDITION: great vintage condition; there is crazing throughout the dish-these are cracks in the glaze, but not in the pottery itself; there is a small spot on the bottom rim that is unglazed, but I'm not sure if it is a manufacturer's flaw; no chips
