Vintage MERLE NORMAN COSMETICS Commemorative Plate Gold Trim Large Size

Description: Waiting for your purchase is this large porcelain plate featuring MERLE NORMAN, of Merle Norman Cosmetics. I imagine the plate was probably given away as a reward or incentive. Merle Norman was a contemporary of famous beauty experts Max Factor and Helena Rubenstein. She opened a small cosmetics business in 1931. She always encouraged women to own their own franchises and pioneered the concept of the free makeover. Her nephew, J. B. Nethercutt took over the business and turned it into a large company with franchises all over the country. Ms. Normal died in 1972. This plate is very ornate and lovely. There is a picture portrait of Merle Norman in the upper center over a blue background with white stars. A ribbon banner beneath says "Merle Norman Beauty....Quality....Integrity..Loyalty...Love...". The plate has a u-shaped white area and then a u-shaped apricot or light orange area. Around this are the lower case initials "mn" done in gold. The plate is lavishly decorated in gold with leaf scrolls, a wreath at the bottom with what appears to be a harp or lyre inside a frame of leaves. The edge of the plate is also edged in gold. This is a great plate for the Merle Norman fan. It measures 10 3/4 inches in diameter across. There is no maker's mark or information on the back. This is really a stunning plate--my photo doesn't do it justice.
